Green Day and Pink have both been added to this year’s slate of performers at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards, Rolling Stone can reveal this morning. The band’s live performance from New York on September 13th will mark the 21st Century Breakdown punks’ third time hitting the VMAs stage: Green Day played Insomniac’s “Armatage Shanks” in their VMAs debut back in 1994, and followed that up over a decade later with American Idiot’s “Boulevard of Broken Dreams” in 2005, with “Boulevard” also taking home that year’s Video of the Year Award. (In ‘95, Green Day performed “Stuck With Me” on the VMAs via satellite, or “Spit-Cam” after Billie Joe Armstrong told the crowd to loogie into the lens.)

“We are excited to be performing at the Video Music Awards,” Armstrong said in a statement. “You never know what’s going to happen, and it’s always a memorable experience for us.” For an idea of what Green Day’s VMA night performance might look like, take a look at how their 21st Century Breakdown arena show and club gigs have gone down.

Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool will join previously announced VMAs performers Taylor Swift, who will sing a new version of Fearless‘ “You Belong With Me,” and Muse, who will debut their new single “Uprising.” British comedian Russell Brand will repeat as host after a tumultuous rookie year emceeing in 2008 during which he found a charming way to offend fans of the Jonas Brothers’ purity rings (relive his wackiness in our 2008 VMAs live blog). Pink, who did a memorable version of “So What” on a Hollywood back lot in ‘08, said, “Last year I got to jump out of a window at the VMAs in L.A., this year I can’t wait to blow the roof off Radio City in New York.”

The VMAs are returning to the Big Apple after calling Los Angeles and Las Vegas home for the past two years. In 2007, Britney Spears was scheduled to make her comeback on the show, but bombed during a lackluster performance of Blackout’s “Gimme More.” Last year Spears returned — to accept a pair of awards and appear in a batch of suggestive promo ads with Brand. So the big question this year: will Spears, now on a successful world tour for Circus, finally return to the VMAs stage — the site of so many of her iconic performances — in 2009? Will Madonna show up to promote “Celebration” from her hits collection Celebration, out in early August? Stay tuned to Rock Daily for all the latest news on MTV’s biggest night as the show draws closer.
